Rainy night ambience

Pixel Rainy Window

You know when it's pouring outside at night and you just sit by the window and watch it come down for way longer than you meant to? This is that, except it never stops - pixel-art clouds rolling over the glow of a city you can't see, rain falling at four different depths, drops running down the glass and thunder rumbling way off in the distance.

Leaving it on here is free. If you like having it around, $5 or more through itch.io (card or PayPal) helps keep a tiny studio making stuff like this, and we'll throw in the offline copy - the whole thing in one file that runs in any recent browser, no internet needed.

About it

There's no window frame or room drawn around it, so the only way you know there's glass is the drops. The big ones stick for a second, then slide down and wipe the little ones out of their way, and every drop bends the sky behind it upside down like a real one would. The clouds are lit from underneath by the city, and when lightning hits you can see it light them up from inside before the thunder gets to you - it's timed to how far away the strike was, and some of them happen out of sight so you only hear them.

There are three kinds of weather. Evening Rain starts at dusk with the last of the sunset on the horizon and the moon peeking through, Night Rain is a little heavier and darker, and Midnight Storm is the one with the big close strikes. The rain comes and goes on its own in all of them, so it never sits at one level for long.

All the sound is real rain and thunder recordings, cut up and mixed so it never repeats the same way twice. There's no music, just the rain, so put on your own records if you like. It's made to be left on - go full screen and stay as long as you like.

Evening Rain, pixel-art clouds over a warm orange city glow on the horizon, with the moon showing through a gap and rain streaking down Midnight Storm, a close lightning strike lighting the purple clouds from inside, with drops on the glass Night Rain a few seconds after pressing play, with the Night Rain card at the top and the controls bar along the bottom
