Dungeons & Gangsters
It's a fantasy RPG, but street-level - classic 2014 rules math, street dice instead of a d20, Middle-earth with a Section-8 lease, dragons in silk and wizards on Skid Row. You either come up or crap out.
Playing it here is free. If you want to keep it, $2 or more through itch.io (card or PayPal) gets you the offline copy - it runs in any browser, no internet needed.
About the game
You start by picking your Blood and your Work. There are eight races with street names: Block Native (Human), Hustler (High Elf), The Don (Mountain Dwarf), Bruiser (Half-Orc), Sticky Fingers (Lightfoot Halfling), Hellspawn (Tiefling), Scale Set (Dragonborn) and Tinkerer (Rock Gnome). And there are eight classes: Enforcer, Stickup Kid, Trap Wizard, Street Prophet, Berserker, Rapper, Oath of the Block and Pact of the Plug. If you just want to get going, hit New hustle and Walk in and you'll start as a ready-made Rogue.
There are five cities to work through:
- The Shire Projects is Section-8 Middle-earth, round doors stacked into a high-rise with turf roofs, and it's home, unfortunately.
- The Five Boroughs is Manahatta, the East Coast of the Realms, with castle-skyscrapers, orc rooftops and a dwarven Little Italy.
- Los Angeles is the West Side, with palm trees, panther-drawn lowriders, Skid Row wizards and cobalt banners on the lights.
- Traplanta is the A, humid ziggurat-tenements where Zone 6 is a dungeon with a doorbell.
- And at the top is The Penthouse, the Plug's hoard - marble, gold and a dragon in a silk shirt, because even the top of the food chain has a buzzer.
Instead of a d20 you shoot the bones, which is two d10s. Add your bonus and beat the DC, or their armor class, to hit. When a fighter sets his feet his next swing hits double, so you Hustle and he swings at air. Drop to zero and you're shooting death saves.
Then there's Cee-lo. 4-5-6 wins, 1-2-3 loses, then trips and points, and ties go to the bank. After your roll you can let it ride and double the stake before the bank shoots, and the hint shows your chance of winning.
There are four endings - win, take the deal, take the dice or live to work the corner - and the Rap Sheet keeps track of the endings, crews, classes and races you've won with, plus your best runs!
